Keeping a Windows to Go Drive uptodate
Posted by: TechnoMax - 08-29-2020, 06:02 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (11)

I have several small USB-SSDs with bootable copies of my Windows boot partition. I do not want to write too often to these drives and therefor thought it coul be a good idea to use a sychronising app (SecondCopy) to "simply" make the USB-SSD the same as my PC -SSD (Exact copy, copy source to destination, delete obsolete files from destination) . But even when I booted from a WinToUSB drive and copied the files "cold" from the PC to another WinToUSB drive it did not work. Inoticed that the latest programms I had installed on the PC did not show up on the copy that should have been identical. Went something wrong or is it simply no good idea to try it the way I did?

Is it possible to dual boot with Linux?
Posted by: 0ravla - 08-24-2020, 12:07 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

Hi!

I have an SSD with Arch Linux installed, and I can boot from it just plugging it to an USB and selecting it on the boot menu. I would like to install Windows 10 alongside Linux, to be able to boot from any of them.

I made a NTFS partition on the SSD and tried to install Windows on it. However, I got the typical error “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. Setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a USB or IEEE 1394 port”.

Is it possible to install Windows in that partition with WinToUSB? Will it break my Linux installation?

Thanks in advance! ^^

Clone -- flash drive not found
Posted by: Leon Anson - 08-13-2020, 05:17 AM - Forum: WinToHDD - Replies (1)

System: Win10 Pro
WinToHDD Pro: 3.8

Using System Clone, after selecting the current system to clone and clicking on Next, in the prompt "Please select the destination disk:", it does not show my flash drive (Sandisk Cruser 256GB). I tried different USB slots and even reformatted the drive, to no avail, even though Windows explorer shows that it is a valid drive. How do I get the program to recognize the drive? Please help!

  Enabling Virtualisation (within Windows)
Posted by: johne53 - 08-12-2020, 08:46 PM - Forum: EasyUEFI - Replies (2)

Hi there - I'm using a Mac Pro which I can dual-boot into either OS-X or Windows 10.  The booting bit all works fine...

The problem here is that I need to enable Virtualisation which can only be enabled from within a machine's BIOS/UEFI.  But unfortunately, Macs don't allow access to it - not even when running Windows  Sad

Within OS-X you can usually change BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing certain keys during bootup and I've successfully enabled Virtualisation - BUT - it only seems to enable it for OS-X.  If I reboot into Windows, Virtualisation is still disabled.

Is this something that EasyUEFI could help with?

WinToUSB does not allow changing Page File Settings!
Posted by: MarkGerazz - 07-27-2020, 11:03 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

Hello,

I'm trying to play Red Dead 2 and the only fix for running out of virtual memory is by setting the Page File Size to Automatic, or something custom. I fixed this on my desktop before. Now, on my laptop, the settings don't save no matter what. Yes I hit "set", "apply", "restart". Does not save. Weird because on my desktop "automatic" is already engaged.

Specs:

Laptop: GS66
OS: Windows 10 pro version 2004
16gb DDR4
Rtx 2070 Max q
10750h
Samsung 840 Pro 500gb

THanks!

In my external drive, I created a partition for bootcamp
Posted by: eresall - 07-27-2020, 04:16 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (3)

But in "Please select the destination disk" part, the only option it's giving me is what seems like the entire external drive.
It says:
Disk 1: WD easystore 2647

Which seems to be the name of my whole drive? (I have a portion of it named Bootcamp; it's empty and )

Does WintoUSB allow using only a portion of the drive as bootcamp or does it require the whole drive to be dedicated to bootcamp?

Or, since I have only the Bootcamp portion of my drive formatted to MS-DOS, will WintoUSB only affect that part of my drive and leave other partitions alone?

  WinToUSB License Question
Posted by: mconwell - 07-18-2020, 01:35 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

The professional license indicates that I can register WinToUSB on 2 computers.

I will be using 1 license on a VM to install Windows on a USB drive.  I'm concerned that if that VM is destroyed or somehow lost, is that license forever gone?

Or is the license saying that I can only create 2 USB Windows installations?

Thanks,

Mike

[RESOLVED] Problem: The system cannot find the device specified.
Posted by: rhys - 07-15-2020, 08:41 PM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (2)

I'm wondering if anyone can offer advice on this. I am having a problem when creating a WinToUSB 'Physical to USB' copy. I've previously been succesful with this laptop/external SSD, but now am repeatedly hitting this issue.

WinToUSB professional version 5.5
Source: Lenovo T490 1TB NVME
Target: Samsung Portabl SSD T5 (500GB) (attemped when connected via thunderbolt & USB 3)

Steps:

  • select 'Physical to USB'
  • choose the T5 SSD from the dropdown choice
  • accept the default 'MBR for BIOS and UEFI' format option

Formatting begins, with a 100MB FAT32, and 466GB NTFS partitions being created. Shortly after that begins (30 - 60 seconds) the following message is displayed:

The system cannot find the device specified.(0x00050066042C0000)

I have tried all format options instead, and also used Partdisk 'Clean' to ensure that the target drive is as blank as possible. I have also tried removing bitlocker encryption from the source drive. Still the same issue.

If I choose the 'Keep the existing Partition scheme' option when formatting, then the next panel does show the target disk, but does not allow me to select which partition should be used for EFI & Boot.

Any suggestions welcome.
