What is GPT disk?

Updated on July 2, 2024 by Admin to Portable Windows Creator

GPT is short for GUID Partition Table, it was introduced as part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) initiative. GPT provides a more flexible mechanism for partitioning disks than the older Master Boot Record (MBR) partitioning scheme that was common to PCs. For instance, the storage device using GPT partition scheme can support hard disk larger than 2TB (MBR only supports hard disk within 2TB), and the GPT doesn't limit partition quantity (MBR supports at most four primary partitions). Besides, GPT disk boots from UEFI based computer, while MBR disk boots from legacy BIOS based computer.
